Just Do It.
Nike got something right when they came up with this slogan. Believe it or not, I was very athletic as a kid/young adult. In fact, I ended up coaching women's Varsity and Jr Varsity Basketball for 3 years fresh out of college. I loved it! One thing I admire about my years in being a coach is learning the art of lovingly but firmly giving direction to the team. I wanted something from them. Mostly I wanted them to succeed! I could see game plans playing out with precision as long as teammates kept their eye on the prize. I could also see at times fear in their eyes as in a moment confidence was shaken from a successful blow from the opponent. In an instant (and maybe more so quickly with girls) there was a shift in confidence which affected focus and ultimately ability to follow through.
So what had to be taught in the training is focus. Emotions become irrelevant and the DISCIPLINE (OBEDIENCE) of skill and training kick in. Despite our feelings, we face opposition and do what we know to do.
I'm writing about this as my first blog because this is where I'm at with certain things the Lord has been asking me to do. Lately, He's been giving me that gentle but firm prod of "Just Do it". Just step out. Just make a move. But what I've been learning about myself is that I tend to bury the gifts that mean the most to me. Probably from fear of failure or fear of rejection.
Often, just like my basketball team, it is hard to see the bigger picture while being "in the game." But from the sidelines, and having thought through the successful purpose of the plays I had given them, I had to reassure them - JUST DO IT.
We don't always know or understand the Lord's purpose in the plans He has for us, but if we step out IN OBEDIENCE and JUST DO IT He will fulfill what He has in store. We also won't always know the full FRUIT OF OUR OBEDIENCE. When I tell the point guard to drive left, that's a play that pulls defense to the left, and should open up the right rear forward for a solid bucket shot. (Comprende?) All you may know is your part of "driving left". But the success comes from TEAMWORK. And we are entering into TEAMWORK with the Holy Spirit when we OBEY the Lord.
Quit trying to figure it all out first. That's not your job! That's the MASTER's job! Get training FIRST on how to follow the voice of God/Holy Spirit by daily being in His Word and praying. We won't know what He's saying unless we take time to listen! let the Spirit of God train you on how to be Obedient. He will train us on how to OBEY, and that OBEDIENCE then carries us through to DO HIS WILL.
"My Sheep hear my voice and they follow Me." - John 10:27
What is the Lord asking you to do that you've been afraid to step out and do?
I bet you know the answer.... JUST DO IT!
Here's a song by KEITH GREEN that always stirs me to the act of obedience:
